Zine

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Racism has always existed in the US; in fact, it is the underlying problem to many other problems. The bad news is racism is entrenched in our systems, institutions, and culture and will take tremendous effort to undo. The good news is that it is a learned behavior that can be unlearned, but in order for us to unlearn it, we have to acknowledge it first.

Purpose

  • What I care about as an international student
  • Helping people around me to know racism still exist
  • Making an impact in community

Brainstorm

I started by creating a list words that describe my project most. And then pick final three as my key tone words. After that, I started thinking about the layout of my zine.

Moodboard

I also went to Goggle and Pinterest to search for color palette and some inspirational photo that could be used in my zine

Mockup

The first round of printed mockup didn’t come out what I expected. The first page got upside down. Moreover, there were too much white space on the side of photo.

Final Product

Below is the final zine in digital file. I took a lot of feedback from the class. For example, in earlier mockup, some people suggest me to have more variation on the color choices. I took the advice and I think it looks much better and fit with the “blend”

Distribution

I gave out my zine during the weekend. I put some of them at Starbucks, gas station, restaurants and gave out the rest to my friends. I took pictures of my friends and everyone looked at the quotes seems to appreciated it.
