Week 2: App Analysis

Questions to answer

  • What is it?
  • who uses it?
  • Why do they use it?

I’ll be exploring two apps that have similar features and/or end goals as my idea. The apps I’m analyzing are Airbnb and Instagram.

What is it?
Airbnb is a service that connects people to unique travel experiences, at any price point, in more than 34,000 cities and 190 countries. It is a trusted community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book unique accommodations around the world.

Who uses it?
People who want to make money by listing their space, as well as travellers looking for a more unique place to stay. It can be more affordable, or offer a better location.

Why do they use it?
For the host users, they use it because it’s a great and convenient way to monetize their extra space and showcase it to travellers. Studies show that Airbnb is an important source of income for local residents who use the platform to share their home. They can also proudly share their culture and community with the travellers.

For travellers, it often gives them a more unique living space during their trip. Often getting a better idea of a city, or living in unique homes, etc.

80 percent of guests use Airbnb because they want to explore a specific neighborhood, and 45 percent of their spending occurs in the neighborhood where they stay. The average age of Airbnb users is 36 years old.

Features that relate to my idea

Week 3: Design Brief

Purpose

The purpose of this app is to keep track of medication for anyone who has to manage many different pills. Remembering all these times can be a hard thing to do. The goal is to alleviate the stress of managing medications with an easy to use phone reminder app. The goal and backbone of this app is the simplicity of user interaction. This app is primarily for the iOS ecosystem as it matches the design elements and helps uses familiar with the system to be able to use this app with relative ease.

User needs/research

This app is made for my primary persona (listed below), which is a mom who needs to keep track of medications for her illnesses/vitamins. She is very forgetful and her current set up involves many extra steps to ensure she takes her pills on time. This hinders the motivation for taking them and can put her off schedule. She knows and loves her iPhone and has used the previous pill sorting apps, but these took too long to manage and she wants an easy solution.

End goal

This app will be straightforward for an easy time to manage medications and quickly add on the fly. The end goal is a well-designed app that reflects the user’s needs and fine tunes their interactions for maximum ease of use. I hope to encourage my persona to want to keep using this app and want the phone notifications to be engaging enough that she wants to stay on track and have that motivation to take her pills on time and not having to think much about it. I will do this by creating a simple app that has too primary user flows.

Week 4: Persona

My persona is someone who get used to iOS interface and can use it relatively well. She has a cabinet filled with pills that she has to take for her illness and it is hard to manage for her. Bridging what she already does with motivation would be helpful for this persona and it is the main intent of my app.

User Flows

I made a chart for user flows to make sure I land up doing appropriate wireframes. The most important feature of this application is to understand how to add a new medication and by removing annoying steps.

Use Case #1 Onboarding

iPhone X Copy 7

Fiona recently heard about this app and is interested, but isn’t too sure how to use it. She opens it up for the first time and goes through the onboarding process. *Photos, branding, and copy are not finalized*

Fiona opens the app and sees helpful onboarding screens that tell her a little more about what the app is used for. She can choose to skip these screens and jump to the sign-up page.
